BOTOX® for TMJ Treatment
If you’re suffering with jaw pain, chronic headaches, and relentless tension, it might be time for a positive change. At Corey + Then, we use BOTOX as a therapeutic treatment to relax overactive jaw muscles and ease stress on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

What Is TMJ Disorder and Who Does It Affect?
TMJ disorder, also called TMD, affects the jaw joint and the muscles controlling jaw movement. It’s common and frequently underdiagnosed; many patients attribute jaw-related headaches to tension or sinus issues without realizing the jaw is the actual source.
Common symptoms include jaw pain or soreness, teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw tension, headaches, clicking or locking of the jaw, and difficulty chewing. Much of this discomfort originates in the masseter — the primary chewing muscle — and the temporalis, the muscle running along the side of the head. When these muscles are chronically overactive, the impact on daily life can be significant.
How BOTOX Treatment for TMJ Works
BOTOX (botulinum toxin) temporarily reduces the ability of an injected muscle to contract at full force. When placed into the masseter and temporalis muscles, it calms clenching and grinding without interfering with normal jaw function like speaking or eating.
The result: less strain on the jaw joint, fewer tension headaches, and real relief from chronic muscle pain. Most patients notice improvement within a few days, with full results around two weeks post-injection. Relief typically lasts 3–4 months, and consistent repeat treatments can help sustain results over time.
Please note: BOTOX for TMJ is currently used off-label — it has not been FDA-approved specifically for temporomandibular disorders. Off-label use is common and well-established in medicine; it simply means formal approval for this indication is ongoing. Our doctors will walk you through the current evidence so you can make a fully informed decision.
Why See an Oral Surgeon for BOTOX TMJ Treatment?
When it comes to TMJ, who administers the injection matters as much as the treatment itself. Oral surgeons bring specialized knowledge of jaw anatomy, joint mechanics, and the relationship between your bite, muscles, and TMJ. This goes beyond cosmetic injection experience.
At Corey + Then, our doctors evaluate the full clinical picture before recommending any treatment. That means an accurate diagnosis and a plan that’s actually built around getting you lasting relief.

Have questions? Here are answers to what patients ask most. Your surgeon will address your specific situation at your consultation.
Most patients experience relief for approximately 3–4 months. Duration varies based on muscle strength, symptom severity, and individual metabolism. With consistent repeat treatments, muscles tend to become less hyperactive over time, which can gradually extend results.
For most patients, no. The goal is to reduce involuntary clenching and grinding — not to limit normal jaw movement. Some patients notice mild changes in chewing strength right after treatment, which typically resolves quickly. Precise placement and appropriate dosing are key.
Not currently. BOTOX is used off-label for TMD — the FDA has approved botulinum toxin for other muscle conditions, but not specifically for temporomandibular disorders. Off-label use is common in medicine and doesn’t mean the treatment is unsafe. We encourage patients to review the evidence with our team before moving forward.
