Understanding Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. Our oral surgeons perform this procedure with great care, often to resolve pain, address infection, or prepare your mouth for restorative treatments. Common reasons for tooth extractions include severe tooth decay, advanced gum disease, impacted teeth like wisdom teeth, or overcrowding.

There are two main types of extractions:

  • Simple Extraction: This is performed on a tooth that is visible in the mouth. The dentist or oral surgeon will loosen the tooth and remove it
  • Surgical Extraction: This is a more complex procedure, required when a tooth has not fully erupted or has broken off at the gum line. The oral surgeon will make a small incision in the gum tissue to remove the tooth

The Tooth Extraction Process

We want you to feel prepared and comfortable, so we take the time to walk you through every step of the process.

Initial Consultation

Your journey begins with a personal consultation. This is an important opportunity for us to perform a thorough examination, review your medical history, and understand your concerns. We will explain why the extraction is recommended and answer any questions you may have.

Pre-Extraction Preparation

Before the procedure, we will give you clear instructions to follow. We’ll also discuss anesthesia options to ensure your comfort. Our priority is to create a calm and reassuring experience for you.

The Extraction Procedure

During the extraction, the surgeon first numbs the area with a local anesthetic so you won’t feel discomfort. For a simple extraction, the tooth is gently loosened and removed. For a surgical extraction, the surgeon will make a small incision in the gum to access and remove the tooth.

Post-Extraction Care

Proper care after your procedure is key to a smooth recovery. Our team will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions.

Immediate Aftercare

Immediately following the extraction, we will have you bite on a gauze pad to help control bleeding and encourage a blood clot to form in the extraction site. Managing any swelling or tenderness is also important, and we will advise you on the best methods. Protecting the blood clot is crucial, as this prevents a painful condition called dry socket.

Recovery Tips

For the first 24 hours, we recommend rest and avoiding strenuous activity. Sticking to soft foods like yogurt, soup, and smoothies will be more comfortable. You can brush and floss your other teeth as normal but should avoid the extraction site until it has had time to heal.
